Photo ID Requirements

Bring Your ID When You Vote

In Tennessee, you’ll need to show a photo ID with your name on it when you vote—whether it’s during early voting or on Election Day. This helps make sure the process is fair and secure.

Here’s the good news: lots of IDs will work, and they can even be expired! You can use any of these:

  • Tennessee driver license with your photo

  • U.S. Passport

  • Photo ID from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security

  • Photo ID from the federal or Tennessee state government

  • U.S. Military photo ID

  • Tennessee handgun carry permit with your photo

Some IDs that WILL NOT suffice for the purposes of voter identification

Whereas some IDs serve you well elsewhere, not everything that has your photo and name will satisfy the statutory requirements for “voter identity.”

Some examples of what wouldn’t be accepted for the purposes of voting:

  • High School or University Student ID
  • High School Staff ID
  • Credit or Debit cards with photos
  • Medicare or Medicaid cards
  • Employee IDs
  • Hunting or fishing licenses
  • Public Assistance Cards (SNAP/EBT cards)
